After her marriage breaks up Susan Hughes leaves Boston for LA where her matchmaking sister Victoria lives. Susan gets a job at a spa run by the eccentric but fit Milt, with Coral a fellow instructor. Her apartment comes with the obligatory wacky neighbor Leonard.

The series followed the wavering relationship between two ex-lovers, Penny Warrender, a secretary for an advertising firm, and Vincent Pinner, an ex ice cream salesman turned turf accountant (bookmaker) who is also the son of a wealthy scrap metal merchant. The couple split up following Vincent's decision not to marry Penny on their wedding day, leaving her at the altar. In the pilot episode, 5 years since their intended wedding day, the pair meet again by chance in a pub, while out on individual dates. The pair decide to forget the past and become friends, although the rekindling of their relationship is not welcomed by Penny's snobbish parents, particularly her mother, Daphne, played by Sylvia Kay.

Professor Joe Howe is a Korean War veteran who is hired to teach English at Channing College. The dean Fred Baker is his mentor as Howe is writing a novel about his experiences. They are frequently involved in the student's lives.Channing, a production of Revue Studios, aired during the same time frame as the first season of NBC's somewhat similar offering, Mr. Novak.

The show focuses on the pet peeves of casting directors, providing a funny backdrop on how normal the working Hollywood elite truly are compared to the rest of middle America working offices.
